4 Things to Keep in Mind When Starting a New Role

Joining a new team can be both refreshing and daunting! This is a new beginning with so much potential to make an impact and grow in your career. However, you can also feel pressure when meeting new people and adapting to new environments. This is especially true in remote teams. Today we’ll dive into some tips to help you make the transition smoothly and equip yourself for success – whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting your career.

  1. Embrace the learning curve
    Starting a new role is an opportunity to learn and familiarize yourself with your new environment. Introduce yourself to your colleagues, make connections, and ask questions. Be curious! Finding out as much useful information as you can and showing a willingness to learn can help you thrive. It also encourages communication between you and your new colleagues. 
  2. Connect with your leader
    Open up the dialogue! This can be a great time to find out more about company culture, communication styles, and metrics for success in the organization. Clarifying expectations about what success will look like and how it’s measured will help establish a solid foundation. Be willing to ask for help.
  3. Build relationships
    Get to know the members on your team and their areas of expertise. The people you work with will undoubtedly have an impact on your career, so making an effort to build relationships can be helpful while making the workplace more enjoyable. It’s also important for them to know your strengths and how you can help them.
  4. Be a good listener; ask questions
    Practice active listening. This is a crucial skill for effective communicators, and it makes a good impression too. You’ll gain valuable information and build trust, which sets the tone for positive relationships. Keep an open mind and remember that you’re in a learning phase. By asking questions, you’re getting to know the culture, your role and how best to collaborate with others.
